Mid-century Modern Home Set In A Breath-Taking Location Near Woodstock, NY

Bobby Bui and his partner Gary wanted a mid-century modern home, which are quite rare on the East Coast of the United States, as flat roof homes with walls of glass are not recommended in areas where the climate can be quite cold. When this 1960-s house came on the market, Bobby was especially drawn to it as it reminded him of homes he coveted in his youth while growing up in Southern California. “It really feels like a West Coast home”. Needless to say, this home received multiple offers within the first couple of days on the market, but luck and a strong offer secured it for Bobby and Gary and they moved here in the Fall of 2016. First of all, could you tell me a little bit about the house and what attracted you to it? The house is located in what is considered to be the most famous small town in the United States, Woodstock, NY.   Woodstock has been an arts colony for over 100 years and is also the town …

Design Trend: Portable / Cordless Lamps

In the past few years we have seen more and more portable light design appearing on the market. This is a welcome trend – cables can be hugely unattractive and the need to move a lamp around is dictated by our modern life styles. The versatility of a rechargeable portable lamp means this is a growing market. So what’s available out there right now? I have discovered some very attractive cordless lights suitable for different budgets. Carrie Lamp, Menu In Denmark, where winters are cold and long, creating a warm, cozy atmosphere is a way of life. There is even a Danish word for it – hygge. The idea behind the Carrie LED Lamp is to honour hygge in the context of modern living. Lightweight and portable with a USB charger, the possibilities of the lamp are endless. Use it as a bedside lamp, on an office desk or as an alternative to candles on the dining table. Carrie is also perfectly sized for picnicking in the park, festival-going or moonlit walks on the beach. …

Stable House by Frama

The Stable House is one of a few preserved villas in Copenhagen. The building originally functioned as stables for the horses that carried water from the lakes, and the protected facade was created in 1878 by Georg Møller. Frama Studio has completed the residential project, where a series of stylish details included pivoting brass shutters, a terrazzo floor and a custom-made bed wrapped in solid Douglas fir. The result is a light, warm yet minimalistic feel where every detail of the custom-made furnishings and interior has been thought through. Deco Moderne: Heal’s AW19 Collection

For AW19 Heal’s introduces two new collections Deco Moderne and Modern Nostalgia. Deco Moderne was inspired by the glamour of the Art Deco era and carefully blends 1930s influences with contemporary design elements. Touches of gold and delicate etching hark back to the gilded era while contemporary shapes and finishes give the collection a modern feel. A key part of this collection is collaboration with London-based designer, Genevieve Bennett. Her Knot collection, which includes two mirrors, pendants and a rug, is the first of its kind at Heal’s involving a designer working across several categories. Her mirror designs feature intricate etching onto solid brass while her Deco pendant – Genevieve’s first foray into lighting design – combines linear detailing with an opaque, spherical bulb and glass cloche creating a piece with a vintage feel. The Knot Rug demonstrates Genvieve’s instinctive command for pattern and her commitment to creating pieces which are timelessly elegant. Flowing lines loop together to form a distinctive motif which is enhanced by the contrast of shiny viscose detailing against a matte woollen finish. You can …

This impressive contemporary new build in amazing woodland location 35 minutes from Helsinki is home to Tuuli and her family. A house in the middle of the forest with a vegetable garden next to it is a home of my childhood dreams, so when I saw this house I couldn’t resist to see and find out more. I am an art teacher by education, but also studied marketing at the university.  My occupation is related to marketing, but interior design has been one of my passions since the early age. I see myself as artistic and visual person. I really enjoy doing ceramics and visual arts during my spare time. Could you tell me a little bit about the house? We used to live in a traditional wooden house also located near to …

Interior Designer Alison Anderson on Her Favourite British Made Brands And Local Shopping

I am very interested in British made products and it seems at the moment it’s quite an exciting area with new, small, individually crafted, artisan brands starting up and thriving. There is definitely a revived interest towards local and hand made.  I had a chat with an interior designer Alison Anderson, whose house featured in one of the recent posts, about her love for local and sustainable products and she told me about a few of her favourites:   “I’ve very much a supporter of well made British products and I’m setting up an on-line shop later this year to sell a curated selection of products for the home.  I’ve been busy meeting suppliers and discovering new makers and their amazing products, so it feels like a completely natural extension to my business. I’m on a bit of a mission to fight back against the throw away culture that’s become so ‘normal’ and I love incorporating beautiful finds in my designs that have been well made by talented craftspeople with purpose and passion. It’s easy to become …

Preparation for Spring in Stephen and Karen’s London Apartment

As the days are getting longer and warmer (particularly this week that’s been the warmest few February days on record) I have noticed my neighbours spilling out into their gardens rushing to tidy up their outside space, opening the windows wide and welcoming the early change of season. A this time of year with new enthusiasm we are starting to think of seasonal changes to our homes. I have asked Stephen Thomas who works for a London branch of B&B Italia to share with me his thoughts on how he is planning to prepare his home for spring this year. Stephen shares a Victorian London apartment with his wife Karen Yuen who works for Clippings. “This time of year after a long dark and dismal winter, where the early afternoon around 4 O’clock begins with the flick of a light switch,  where the interior of the apartment has been filled with the scents of heavily braised, slow cooked meals eaten from bowls on the coffee table, and the living memory of box sets dramas, and …
