Copenhagen Home Of Pottery Lovers Filled With Design Classics

Today I invite you on a photographic tour of this bright and airy Copenhagen home that belongs to Tina, who expertly combines passion for contemporary Nordic design with her love of pottery. The liveability, effortless comfort and cosiness together with high aesthetic value is what I think makes Scandinavian style so attractive. Tina’s home is a wonderful example of this. What I particularly love about this home is abundant but considerate use of design classics, ceramics in simple earthy tones grouped together for best impact (I particularly like window sill displays as I often wonder how to make window sills more interesting), moroccan rugs on the floor – goes perfectly with Nordic style and of course paired down colour scheme. JWDA Table Lamp by MENU – The One Lamp Every Home Needs

About a year ago I set out to search for a table lamp for my bedroom. I have a sideboard along one of the walls and was fixated to place an oversized lamp there to create drama. So how did I end up with a small and minimalistic JWDA? Inspired by traditional oil lamps, the lamp was designed by Stockholm-based designer Jonas Wagell for one of my favourite Scandinavian brands MENU. This light does not shout “Look at me!” but it does possess timeless quality of a future classic. The simple rounded shape of an opal glass and a sturdy base made of a combination of two natural materials, be it marble, concrete or metal (mine is in brass), make it fit perfectly into any context – a bedside table, a desk, a sideboard or on bookshelves. Jonas explains his design philosophy: “I want to create products that can be used every day and become part of people’s lives.” In practical terms, what makes it so perfect is the lamp’s quality of light. The manual …

Prettiest Christmas Decorations By Walther & Co

I have a confession to make – I am not that bothered about Christmas. I am feeling slightly nervous though admitting this in the midst of all the festive preparations. Don’t get me wrong, I do get a little bit excited in the run up, setting the table on Christmas day and opening presents with the kids, but after the festivities are finished, I am quite glad to put all the decorations back into their boxes, sweep up drying Christmas tree needles off the floor and return the house back to normal again. But this was until I discovered Christmas decorations, which I promise, you will want to have on display all year round! I am talking of course about ethereal creations by Danish brand Walther & Co. The brand is a creation by Birgitte Herrig, who named the company after her grand father who travelled a lot in Indonesia and India and always brought back exciting and special objects. This has inspired her to mix Nordic traditions and Asian mystery in a both nostalgic …

Stable House by Frama

The Stable House is one of a few preserved villas in Copenhagen. The building originally functioned as stables for the horses that carried water from the lakes, and the protected facade was created in 1878 by Georg Møller. Frama Studio has completed the residential project, where a series of stylish details included pivoting brass shutters, a terrazzo floor and a custom-made bed wrapped in solid Douglas fir. The result is a light, warm yet minimalistic feel where every detail of the custom-made furnishings and interior has been thought through. Trend Alert: Seashell Inspired Designs

Organic but intricate forms of sea creatures is a great source of inspiration for home decor. Reminiscent of art deco designs today seashell motifs in furniture and accessories are as popular as ever. Here is a selection of my favourites.   Eichholtz Sofa Messina This elegant sofa is inspired by the sumptuous sculptural silhouettes of Art Deco armchairs.   Feather chair and bed, Anthropologie This collection is a result of Anthopologie’s collaboration with a Welsh designer Bethan Gray. The award-winning designer ‘s love of detail, texture, and luxury defines her signature style. In this collaboration, she embraces both sleekly geometric and fascinatingly biomorphic silhouettes and endows them with an eclectic, yet modern touch – the result is a glamorous, head-turning collection. This Art Deco inspired shape of arm chairs and sofas is very popular at the moment and you will be able, no doubt, to find multiple variation on the theme by different brands. Although this one is called feather, to me it also looks very much like a shell. This particular chair and bed …

Product of the Month: Pal Stool by Northern

Designed by Sami Kallio in 2018 this stool perfectly combines modern minimalist shape, natural materials and beautiful wicker detail. Rattan is very much on trend at the moment seen everywhere from well established high end brands to budget friendly retailers. I have a strong feeling though that this simple design will transcend the fleeting fashion and end up a design classic. This three-legged stool is crafted in oak and fitted with a choice of seats. The wicker seat is woven from natural reed fibres and integrated into the frame to sit level with the surface. Part of the stool’s character is formed by the relationship between natural materials and craft techniques, which make each stool one-of-a-kind. The legs rise to the full height of the seat, creating a simple, yet striking, profile as they sit alongside the frame rather than underneath it. Lightweight, stackable and easy to store, Pal is always available when additional seating is required. Available at madeindesign.co.uk.

Danish Brand HAY: 12 Essentials Every Home Needs

On my recent trip to Bath I stumbled across HAY shop and of course couldn’t go past it. I have never seen the whole shop full of HAY products before and subsequently was surprised to find out that their Bath store is the only one in the country. I wonder why there isn’t one in London – a shame, Bath is a bit far to travel to otherwise I would be a frequent visitor. HAY is one of those several Scandinavian brands I go to whenever I am looking for something for my home. Apart from their contemporary non-pretentious furniture and lighting design (it’s so much more difficult to create something simple but perfect), what I like about them is the fact that they take essential objects in our household, the ones we’d rather keep out of site, like a kitchen sponge, a dish cloth or a tooth brush and make that look beautiful. Another big positive for me – they claim that one of their fundamental goals is to make good design accessible to …

Meet Marianne of Scandinavian Touch (Whitstable, UK)

In summer me and my family went for a day out to one of our favourite seaside destination – Whitstable. I always try and get a moment to myself so I could have a quick run around the local shops. This is where I have found a gem that is Scandinavian Touch, run by Marianne Ofstad. It was actually only their second day since opening but the shop looked very enticing and full of interesting brands, some of them I haven’t seen before. Scandinavian Touch stocks a variety of Norwegian brands such as ceramics by Ment, Kristin Antonsen and Goform, lighting by a Norwegian brand Northern, furniture by Ygg & Lyng, as well as other Scandinavian brands – Danish glassware by Holme Gaard, Art tiles – Danish hand printed tiles, handmade rugs by Danish Linie Design, handsoap and cleaning products by Danish brand Humdakin, Danish handknits by Stinne Gorell, frames and shelving by Moebe and Swedish tiles by Marrakech! I was keen to learn more from Marianne about her business, so I asked her a …

Danish brand Menu is well known for bringing to the market designs by contemporary talents from around the globe and Scandinavian masters whose work has stood the test of time. They have collaborated with such names as Norm Architects, Note Design Studio, Studiopepe to name a few. In their own words their obsession is creating clever solutions for modern living. They want to make beautiful objects for everyday use. The result is a collection unified by simple and functional Scandinavian look with strong aesthetic value. Wherever they can, they work locally with craftspeople around the world. Their Autumn/Winter 2018 collection is out and I have made a selection of my must have pieces from among the new additions and older favourites. Carrie LED Lamp They beauty of the lamp is that, as name suggests, you can carry easily it anywhere. I imagine it working perfectly outdoors on a summer evening, on windowsill where it would be difficult otherwise to hide a cord or in a bathroom, like shown on the picture. Carrie LED Lamp supplies 10 …
