Design Classic: Atollo Table Lamp

For many years now, Atollo has no longer been a lamp, or rather, it has no longer been just a lamp. It has become a myth, an icon: one of the best known symbols of Italian design wordwide, one of the very few products which people recognise and call with its own name. Designed in 1977 by Vico Magistretti, over the years, Atollo has become the archetype of the table lamp, winning the Compasso d’Oro in 1979 and completely revolutionising the way we imagine the classic bedside lamp. The geometric shapes that compose it – cylinder, cone and hemisphere – have resulted in a product that is decorative and essential at the same time, disconnected from the historical period and the fashions of the moment – a luminous sculpture from which nothing can be removed to which nothing can be added. And which nothing can copy. The lamp can be purchased from here. Source:;

Design Classic: Mid-century Decorative Glass

For many years now I have been obsessing with various rainbow shades and imaginative shapes of vintage coloured glass from restrained forms of Holmegaard bowls to bursts of colour by Blenko or Murano glass. What I really like about it, is that you can easily find a spectacular looking object, be it a vase, a paper weight or an ashtray and create a unique centrepiece for a relatively small price compared to, say, a piece of art.   I have recently browsed Etsy and found so many amazing designs that I would like to share with you, so they can be an inspiration not just to me, but perhaps to some of you too. I have added links to the product under each photo. When searching for coloured glass I look out for the following makers: Czechoslovakian vintage glass. Some of it, like Exbor sommerso glass, can get quite expensive but there are cheaper options too if you go for less well known makers. Murano, by different makers. There is a lot of cheap, tacky …

Design Classic: Snoopy Table Lamp by Flos

Today I’ve decided to write about one of my favourite design classics – Snoopy lamp. I absolutely love it’s chunky simple form somehow in contrast with the luxurious material – quite an interesting choice of marble. The lamp was designed in 1967 by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni and inspired by the Charles Shultz invention, and popular cartoon character. You can buy Snoopy table lamp here.   Let’s enjoy a few images of the lamp in situ which prove versatility of this iconic design.   For more inspiration also read: Design Classic: Atollo Table Lamp Design Trend: Portable / Cordless Lamps JWDA Table Lamp by MENU – The One Lamp Every Home Needs
